As far as Willie Green is concerned, it's all about the drums. The youngest child in a musical family, Paul “Willie Green” Womack got his first drum machine at the tender age of eight, accompanied by “some sort of Casio keyboard”. Needless to say, he promptly started wrecking shop.

I used to tape two sets of headphones together so I could make beats with the drum machine and keyboard at the same time. Since I didn't have a four-track, I took two boom-boxes, would record the drums on one, then play that back, record that and the keys back on the other.

By fifteen, Green was part of his uncle’s R&B/Reggae band, playing the drums in clubs he was not even old enough to legally patronize. A lifelong passion for hip-hop music gained its first serious outlet while Green was attending Berklee College Of Music in Boston. He would graduate with a degree in music production and engineering, as well as a burgeoning reputation in the Boston underground scene as a talented beatsmith and sureshot engineer. Still, it was not until relocating to Brooklyn in mid 2007 that the ball really started rolling.

Since the move he has worked with a who's who of independant hip-hop, building up a resume of collaborators that includes Cannibal Ox, Reks, Roc Marciano, Open Mike Eagle, billy woods, and Bad Rabbits among others. Along with his sizeable production load, Green has also become a highly desired mixing and mastering engineer, taking the reins on projects from Japan to the Czech Republic and beyond.
Dedicated to the art of making records, Willie Green has become synonomous with quality music making. Whether it be production, mixing, or mastering, Green maintains

DOC SAVAGE
Doc Savage is the new album from Brooklyn producer Willie Green. Inspired by the retrofuturism of its 1930’s pulp fiction namesake, Doc Savage is a hip-hop epic. A classically-trained musician with a resume full of indie-rap bonafides, Green built this album from the ground up, seamlessly melding live instruments into his head-nod aesthetic, and handcrafted the sound every step of the way, from production to mixing and mastering. Instead of just handing rappers beats to choose from, here Green is a producer in the truest sense of the word.

“I wanted to challenge the artists as well as myself, these aren’t some regular old beats. I wanted to take a lot of musical chances with Doc Savage, and the results are wild,” Green says. “I spent a long time hand picking each emcee for their particular songs, pairing them together and discussing concepts.”

For a celebrated producer & engineer with some noteworthy credits under his belt, Willie Green has kept a fairly low profile. Look around the last five years of indie rap records though, and his name pops up in important places like Open Mike Eagle’s breakout single (Nightmares) and billy woods seminal History Will Absolve Me. Doc Savage is a platform for Willie Green to showcase the depth of his unique talents

“This album is the culmination of all my previous work, expanding on styles and production techniques I’ve explored before. It uses samples, live instruments, orchestration, loops; sometimes all at the same time,” Green explains,” I wanted to make this album because while I’ve always had a vague idea in my mind what all these different parts of my experience would sound like together, now I finally had the capability of putting it together."

Doc Savage features some of independent hip-hop’s most celebrated voices; Open Mike Eagle, Billy Woods, Denmark Vessey, Milo, Elucid, PremRock, Henry Canyons, Junclassic & Uncommon Nasa amongst them.

The album also includes a beautiful 20-page lyric book featuring paintings acclaimed Canadian artist Graeme Borland. Five years in the making, Doc Savage is truly Willie Green’s opus and is available Sept 23rd via Backwoodz Studioz.

Days of Future Past
I’ve got a lot of songs.
A lot like “200 in the past six years” a lot.
That’s what I told Mo Niklz when I asked him to mix this compilation for me. The idea of narrowing down this many songs to the best 30 was a bit daunting; we finally threw in the towel, leaving the final track count at 38. But hell, if those last eight were so good that we couldn’t keep them off, hopefully you’ll find a way to forgive us.
I gave Mo a lot of license picking which songs would make it; I sent him a relatively short list of “must-includes” and told him to surprise me. The result is a solid hour of some of my favorite cuts, along with some unheard gems, featuring Junclassic, Warren Britt, the Bronx up-and-comer Deshawn Supreme, and rap legend General Steele of Boot Camp Clik.
These are songs I either produced or remixed. Every beat here is mine. The download includes liner notes with stories about each song. Many thanks to Backwoodz Studioz, and everyone involved in making these songs, as well as my many others.
I hope you enjoy.
